Middle East powder keg: Senior Israeli General warns danger of regional war involving WMDs growing
Posted on September 5, 2011 by The Extinction Protocol
September 5, 2011 – ISRAEL – Senior IDF officer warns of ‘radical Islamic winter’ that may lead to regional war, could prompt use of WMDs; new, more lethal weapons discovered in hands of terrorists during latest round of fighting in Gaza, Major General Eisenberg says. Recent revolutions in the Arab world and the deteriorating ties with Turkey are raising the likelihood of a regional war in the Middle East, IDF Home Front Command Chief, Major General Eyal Eisenberg warned Monday. “It looks like the Arab Spring, but it can also be a radical Islamic winter,” he said in a speech at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. “This leads us to the conclusion that through a long-term process, the likelihood of an all-out war is increasingly growing,” the IDF general said. “Iran has not abandoned its nuclear program. The opposite is true; it continues full steam ahead,” he said. “In Egypt, the army is collapsing under the burden of regular security operations, and this is reflected in the loss of control in the Sinai and the turning of the border with Israel into a terror border, with the possibility that Sinai will fall under the control of an Islamic entity. In Lebanon, Hezbollah is growing stronger within government arms, but it has not lost its desire to harm Israel, and the ties with Turkey aren’t at their best,” Major General Eisenberg added. Referring to what he characterized as the possibility of a “radical Islamic winter,” Major-General Eisenberg said: “This raises the likelihood of an all-out, total war, with the possibility of weapons of mass destruction being used.” During his address, the senior IDF official revealed that new, more lethal arms surfaced in the hands of Gaza terror groups during the latest round of fighting in the area. As result of the disturbing development, Israeli civilians were instructed to adopt greater precautions, he said. “We discovered a new weapon, and as result of this we instructed the public to hide under two roofs, rather than only one,” he said. Eisenberg added that some 25% of local authorities in Israel are ill-prepared to face emergency situations. -Ynet

September 5, 2011 – N. Sumatra, INDONESIA – A strong, deep 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck just northwest of the Lake Toba super-volcano caldera. The epicenter of the earthquake was 100 km (62 miles) SW of Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia and 1409 km (875 miles) NW of JAKARTA, Java, Indonesia. The process hastening these earth-changes have cleared hit a dramatic escalation point. –The Extinction Protocol
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A powerful earthquake jolted the western Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing a 12-year-old boy and sending people streaming from their houses and hotels in panic. Hundreds of patients from at least one hospital had to be evacuated, some in wheelchairs or with infusion drips still attached to their arms. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.6 -magnitude quake was centered 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the city of Medan at a depth of 62 miles (110 kilometers). It was too far inland, however, to generate a tsunami. -AP

Somalia famine: UN warns of 750,000 deaths in coming months
Posted on September 5, 2011 by The Extinction Protocol
September 5, 2011 – SOMALIA – As many as 750,000 people could die as Somalia’s drought worsens in the coming months, the UN has warned, declaring a famine in a new area. The UN says tens of thousands of people have died after what is said to be East Africa’s worst drought for 60 years. Bay becomes the sixth area to be officially declared a famine zone – mostly in parts of southern Somalia controlled by the Islamist al-Shabab. Some 12 million people across the region need food aid, the UN says. The situation in the Bay region was worse than anything previously recorded, said senior UN’s technical adviser Grainne Moloney “The rate of malnutrition [among children] in Bay region is 58%. This is a record rate of acute malnutrition,” she told journalists in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. This is almost double the rate at which a famine is declared. “In total, 4 million people are in crisis in Somalia, with 750,000 people at risk of death in the coming four months in the absence of adequate response,” the UN’s Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) says. Half of those who have already died are children, it says. Neighbouring Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda have also been affected by the severe lack of rain. -BBC

European markets hammered as debt fears resurface in Eurozone
Posted on September 5, 2011 by The Extinction Protocol
September 5, 2011 – BERLIN – European shares fell sharply on Monday amid renewed fears over the euro zone debt crisis and a warning from Deutsche Bank’s CEO on the outlook for banks. The DAX led the losers, falling by over 5 percent, while stocks in London and Paris also fell sharply. The biggest loser in Germany is Deutsche Bank after CEO Joseph Ackermann told a banking conference that the euro zone debt crisis could kill weak banks and stunt profits for the rest of industry for years to come. You can tune in to CNBC TV for a Special, 2 1/2-Hour ‘European Closing Bell’ from 9:30 am ET to noon ET Monday on the European Market sell-off. Stocks in Asia had tracked Wall Street’s Friday close which saw the Dow [.DJIA 11240.26 -253.31 (-2.2%)] lose over 250 points following news that the world’s biggest economy created no jobs in August. Once European stocks open losses intensified as investors fretted over the euro zone debt crisis and weaker-than-forecast services data from across the euro zone. Over the weekend a meeting of politicians, economists and business leaders on Lake Como outside of Milan saw Italy’s austerity measures and possible changes to Silvio Berlusconi’s 45 billion euro package take center stage. Italian Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti used the meeting in Ambrosetti to repeat his call for a euro bond warning one is launch or “we will have critical problems.” The comments followed a warning by ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet that Italy must follow through on its austerity program, which was agreed with the ECB in return for the central banks support in the bond market. It is “essential that the target that was announced to diminish the deficit will be fully confirmed and implemented.” -CNBC
